Glad to know that the world's leading coffee shop is taking a big step to find solution to the waste problem. I think one way to minimize the use of papers cups is to provide reusable cups for drinking water. Whenever I ask for water, the crew always offers me paper cup. Why not use glasses? Less trash, less expense. Just sterilize and they're good to go.

I have begun traveling with a tupperware, tri-divided plate in which to take home take-out food and left-overs. Why not offer a discount ($.25 per cup?) if the customer brings in his/her own cup/mug for filling? No paper, no recycling, no trash, no cost to Starbucks. I would participate every day!
